For Granted
In a sparkling city called Beverly Hills,
A wealthy man trashes half his dinner,
In an unknown village in central Africa,
A starving child grows even thinner.
In the democratic nations across the globe,
Millions are born into freedom,
In the oppressive countries of the Middle East,
Millions wonder: “what is freedom?”
Just think about...
(Refrain)
All of our wasted days,
All of our wasteful ways,
All the times we gallivanted,
All the things we take for granted.
At a glamorous fashion show in the city of Paris,
Runway models wear thousand dollar shirts,
In the poorest of countries in South America,
|
A peasant is clothed by only dirt.
At a ritzy college campus in New York, NY,
Students skip their classes ‘cause they think it’s cool,
In the third world nations across the globe,
Ambitious kids dream of going to school.
Just think about...
(Refrain)
In a twenty room mansion beside the Riviera,
A rich man spends the night all alone,
On the ice cold concrete of a Detroit sidewalk,
A woman goes to sleep ‘cause she has no home.
In a plastic surgeon’s office in Washington, DC,
A rich woman pays ten g’s to be thin,
Only two blocks away a man dies from pneumonia,
‘Cause he couldn’t afford some medicine.
(Refrain)

So the next time we’re compelled to bitch about how our high-speed internet connections aren’t fast enough for us anymore, why don’t we just put aside our self-centered tendencies for a minute, and try remember that there are people in our world who don’t have high-speed connections, don’t have computers, and don’t even know what the fuck computers are. Because there’s no time to worry about shit like that when you’re trying to figure out where you’re gonna find the most basic things in life… like food, clothing, shelter, freedom, education, and health care. The things we have and take for granted every day. Just think about it.
